Since taking office in January, Trump has repeatedly said he wants Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, a suggestion that has angered Canadians.

The Liberal election platform said a Carney government would send "more Canadian diplomats and officials abroad" to expand trade and "restore Canadian leadership."

If King Charles III accepts the invitation, it would be the first time a sovereign has opened Canada's Parliament since 1957 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did so.
