Ely Smith, a graduate of Vian High School and one of the three victims admitted in critical condition, died on July 8.

OKLAHOMA, USA — One of the five victims injured in a fire and explosion at the Choctaw Nation capitol grounds in Tuskahoma on July 2 has died.

Ely Smith’s aunt, Jill Curtis, confirmed he died on July 8. Ely was a graduate of Vian High School and one of the three victims admitted in critical condition after the explosion. Curtis said funeral arrangements will be announced Thursday.

The incident occurred just a day before the Choctaw Nation’s annual Boom in the Valley event. Ely was reportedly helping set up commercial grade fireworks for the event.

Choctaw Nation officials said the incident is under investigation.

5NEWS spoke to Jayme Jo Trueblood shortly after the explosion about planned benefits and fundraisers for the victims.

Jayme said at the time that she had been in contact with Ely’s mom, who said he went in for his second surgery on July 4 and that the family was asking for prayers.
