Sen. Ruben Gallego announces birth of his baby boy

The Arizona senator said he still plans to participate in votes on the Senate floor while on paternity leave.

PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., announced Friday he’s taking a break from his official duties following the birth of his son, Cooper.

“Sydney and I are overjoyed to welcome our son into the world,” Gallego said in a statement. “He is a healthy baby, and I am beyond grateful that both mom and baby are doing well. Michael and Isla are thrilled to welcome their new younger brother into the family.”

Gallego plans to go on paternity leave to help care for the newborn, but the senator still plans to be present to participate in votes on the Senate floor.

Cooper is the second child Gallego has had with his wife, Sydney. The senator also has a son from his first marriage to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
