Teen arrested for fatal shooting of Henderson State University basketball player

A teen has now been arrested in connection to the deadly shooting of a Henderson State University basketball player.

CAMP COUNTY, Texas — An East Texas teen has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Mount Pleasant native Jamarion Brown, a basketball player at Henderson State University.

“It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown,” Henderson State Athletics wrote in a May 24 Facebook post.

The Camp County Sheriff’s Office says early Saturday morning, Onterrian Jamour Newton, 17, of Mount Pleasant, shot Brown, 23, and two other people at a party. Brown died as a result of the shooting. The other two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Newton has been charged with murder and additional charges are pending.

In one season with the Reddies, Brown appeared in 30 games, scoring 6.5 points per game.

“No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates,” Henderson State men’s basketball coach Jimmy Elgas said. “We lift them all up in prayer. Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever.”

Brown’s funeral is set for Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m., at Mount Pleasant High School.
