The United Arab Emirates has officially become a member of the BRICS group after its application was ratified by the five founding nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The announcement was made during the 15th BRICS summit held in Johannesburg from August 22-24.
The UAE’s membership in BRICS reflects its commitment to multilateral action and constructive dialogue in representing developing and emerging economies at an international level. Joining this extended grouping demonstrates the UAE’s support for multilateralism in promoting peace and development globally.
Although the UAE has been a long-term partner of the BRICS group and participated in the ‘Friends of BRICS‘ forum in Cape Town earlier this year, its inclusion as a member is viewed as a significant milestone. The UAE joined the BRICS New Development Bank in 2021, which aims to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his appreciation for the inclusion of the UAE in BRICS, highlighting the country’s commitment to partnerships and its strong spirit of friendship. He emphasized the UAE’s belief in multilateralism as a means to support peace, security, and development across the globe.
His Excellency Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of State, also welcomed the UAE’s inclusion in BRICS, stating that it reflects the country’s dedication to International Cooperation for sustainable development. Sheikh Shakhboot further highlighted the UAE’s commitment to multilateralism and partnerships to achieve prosperity for all nations.
Minister of State Ahmed Al Sayegh emphasized the UAE’s role as a global hub for trade and economic development. He described the UAE’s membership in BRICS as a reflection of the country’s open approach to collaboration with international economic institutions. Al Sayegh also highlighted the UAE’s efforts to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of its economy.
Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, expressed pleasure at the UAE’s membership in BRICS and recognized it as a mechanism to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity. Al Hashimy stressed the UAE’s belief in championing multilateralism and actively engaging in important international arenas.
