The recent Apple event was an eye-opener for many in the gaming industry. All those heavy consoles that present games at 2K or 4K with 30fps or 60fps options have an unexpected new rival. Apple’s reveal of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and a demonstration of their power were something to behold.

During the showcase, they even announced a bunch of triple-A games would be making their debut on this new device. And one cannot help but wonder: does this mean the iPhone is a legitimate gaming device now?

Apple and Gaming have a weird relationship; they have been trying to establish their platform as something where fans can play games and watch movies, pretty much doing anything. That’s why they started the Apple Arcade service, an Xbox Game Pass-esque service that people played numerous games on after paying a one-time monthly fee.

That service featured a bunch of very good games, but almost 90% of those games were mobile games. Now Apple even has a solution for that, all thanks to the power of their latest chipset. Apple’s iPhone Pro and Pro Max can run games like Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and Resident Evil 4 Remake. There was even a mention of Death Stranding coming to these phones, which is not surprising given the fact that Hideo Kojima has a track record of supporting unusual platforms.

Apple Aims for Console-Level Mobile Gaming As Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage Gets Confirmed for iPhone 15 Pro Series

Does this mean these phones are now competing with the likes of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles? Of course, the ability to take those games on the go is an add-on too. It would mostly depend on how far Apple decides to take it, though, because if they decide to try and abandon this stuff as Google did with Stadia, then there’s no point to it.

If Apple wants it, this can indeed be a very big thing in gaming. But no, it cannot by any chance replace these consoles.

The mainline gaming consoles can survive this though; heck, even the Nintendo Switch is going to be able to stand its ground against the iPhone 15 Pro. After all,  power is not everything. But the biggest hit would come to devices like Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc. These devices are set to lose a huge share of the market.

Of course, they can run a larger library of games, but there’s a lot of hit-and-miss involved with devices like these. As they do not have a particularly optimized library of their own. iPhones on the other hand would have highly optimized games.
