Wrong-way crash closes lanes on I-17 in Phoenix

The crash happened at milepost 196 near 7th Avenue in south Phoenix.

PHOENIX — An investigation is underway after a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle on Interstate 17 Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at milepost 196 near 7th Avenue in south Phoenix, the Department of Public Safety said. Southbound lanes are closed with no estimated time to reopen.

DPS confirmed that the wrong-way driver, a young woman, was killed in the crash. The other driver, a man, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials haven’t disclosed their identities.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Drivers can expect delays this morning.
